PROJECT 2

Week 5

This week, we were introduced to a new assignment in which we had to illustrate a particular turning point in our chosen urban legend. Mr Hafiz also added that we were only allowed to use the art deco style for this illustration.

The story that I chose is a Japanese urban legend called The Red Room. I brainstormed different elements that could be included in my illustration, and I also came up with mood boards as part of my research. I wanted to combine Japanese art styles with the art deco style in order to better reflect the story's setting but still adhere to the given brief.

Week 6

We were given another Chiaroscuro exercise to complete in class. We had to trace the picture below and add colour to the outlines.

After this exercise, we had to show our sketches to Mr Hafiz. I mostly played around with flat compositions because it fit both the art deco style and the Japanese style.

Week 7

For the final piece, Mr Hafiz wanted us to create our own textures and apply them in our illustrations. I made mine by spraying spray paint onto the surface of water, then placing a sheet of paper on top of it for the paint to stick.

Fig. 3.1: Handmade texture.

Besides digitizing the illustration, we also had to animate it into a GIF. Mr Hafiz mentioned that even for graphic designers, being able to animate is a requirement, which is why he wanted us to at least gain some experience in this field.

Feedback: The finishing is nice and it fits the art deco style. However, the writings are too messy compared to everything else. The GIF could also be more subtle.
