PROJECT 1

Week 1

In our first class, Mr Hafiz introduced us to the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. As practice, we were told to trace out all the Vormator elements as shown below, after which we would be using them to create our own characters. I couldn't get used to the pen tool, so it took me quite a while to complete this exercise.

Week 2

This week, we were taught how to add shadows and textures to our Vormator characters using the knife tool, the pen tool, the pathfinder and also different blending modes. For the exercise, we had to trace out a Chiaroscuro pear and add shadows using the pathfinder tool. We were also allowed to play around with textures to make the outcome more interesting.

Week 3

We finalized our Vormator characters and moved on to laser cutting with Jeff. We were introduced to the laser cut software and the .dxf format we had to use for our files. Before sending it to the machine, we had to clean up our characters by simplifying the outlines and marking out which lines to cut and which lines to etch. We also had to make sure that there were no groups or compound paths, otherwise the file wouldn't work in the laser cut software. Because of this, everyone took a long time before they could finally cut out their Vormator characters.

Week 4

The final step for this assignment was to create Pokémon cards for our characters. I continued to use the Vormator elements in creating my background because I liked the challenge of it.
