The Brief
Ideation

Duration of Assignment
Week 1 – 6 (5 weeks)

Deadline
Week 6

Description
Ideation is the mode of the design process in which you concentrate on idea generation. Mentally it represents a process of ‘going wide’ in terms of concepts and outcomes.

Ideation will help you:
  • Ask the right questions.
  • Get obvious solutions out of your head.
  • Uncover unexpected areas of innovation.
  • Create volume and variety in your innovation options.

You are required to collect 100 iconic symbols/visuals. It can be made up of places, people, objects and scenes that represent the cause/campaign/event. It has to be unique and portrays the subject in every context.

Think more, Google less.

Requirements / Submission
100 iconic symbols/visuals of places, people, objects and scenes accompanied by a short description for each of the selected symbols/visuals.
Visual collage in A4 (the more the merrier).

Objective
To generate well-founded opportunities that have a good prospect of creating value in the end-market, and which matches a brand’s strength and strategy

FEEDBACK

Week 2
Good mix of ideas. The visual of the intersection is interesting because it relates to the topic in a more conceptual way.

Week 3
Good effort in the slides and pacing of how the ideation was formed. Critical thought on the collaborative aspect of art and science in the group of icons looking at diverse topics.

Week 4
The exploration of the meaning behind different shapes and how they relate to the topic is quite interesting. It might be harder to continue finding visuals because the obvious ones have already been exhausted.

Week 5
For the next 20 visuals, consider the brand's big idea as well as actual artworks, technology and people that are related to both arts and science.

REFLECTION

Experience
Overall, this project was quite challenging because it forced me to approach my topic from various angles. It was also very time-consuming and tedious to be doing this every single week. However, it was a good learning experience for me because I actually discovered a lot of things that I never knew before.

Observation
Sometimes, the best plan is not having a plan. I noticed that my ideation process flowed much smoother when I didn't limit myself to just certain areas and angles. Rather than following a fixed plan in my head, it was better when I let my initial ideas lead to other ideas that I didn't consider before.

Findings
Studying the topic from a wider perspective provides a more comprehensive understanding and a clearer picture of the brand. It also opens up more possibilities for the design process later.
